Mobile Handset Report (Update) PDF Print E-mail

The Nigerian handset market is set to become the largest in Africa. Studies have shown that, shipments of new GSM

phones should rise from approximately 11million in 2007 to above 15million in 2008 and 19million in 2009.

Yet, less than half of the population has a mobile phone.  GSM devices account for the great majority of the market, with sales of CDMA mobile phones standing at about 12%.  The introduction of handsets that retail at less than 1,000 naira by CDMA operators has no doubt given a boost to the marketplace.

Nokia continues to lead the Nigerian handset market, accounting for nearly half of all sales and one of the top five most popular handsets. Nevertheless, other brands of handsets are making increasingly strong visibility and hold a sizeable market share too.  The others on the list of top-five vendors were Samsung, Sagem, Sony Ericsson and Motorola……….
